EDITOR’S NOTE

The Faculty Moderators here at Folio are thrilled to introduce our 48th issue. This collection of writing and art includes undergraduate students from Yale University, Barnard College, University of Nebraska-Omaha, Tufts University, Northwestern University, and beyond. This issue also features work from members of our editorial team, English majors whose investment in the Creative Writing program has elevated the standards of the work we publish and the on-campus English Department community alike. These English majors are members of Sigma Tau Delta, and some, including our Editor-in-Chief, Amanda Knipe, are graduating seniors, whose presence at Holy Family University will be sincerely missed. As a parting a gesture, the Faculty Moderators and Amanda alike agreed that her poem, “thirteen,” sets a fitting tone for the issue to follow. “thirteen” includes percentages that refer to the most recent US Census data available.

thirteen

BY AMANDA KNIPE

to fifty percent of our population                  i’m sorry

on behalf of                 women.

                             she needed this

gender over quality // no matter the experience

if “the ceiling is made of brick”                                               then

give me a hammer & chisel // for anarchy is rampant–

to forty percent of our population                 i’m sorry

on behalf of                      white                                                             people.

                              those of color needed this

bigotry over progress // no matter the cost

“pull yourself up by your bootstraps”                                        then

you’ll nosedive // for gravity is constant–

to eight percent of our population         i’m sorry

on behalf of                       queer                                                     people.

                               we needed this

hatred over acceptance // no matter the deaths

“stop saying it and just do it already”                                         but

the pain will subside // for karma is not instant–

i was thirteen then                                                                               hopefully,

i’ll be twenty-six, will survive–
