fragility

A heart is fragile like a pretty ceramic doll
That smiles to cover up the hurt inside

Is she that ceramic doll?
What would it take for her to crack?

Would it be harsh words from a lover
Or lies they can’t take back?

Maybe she’s not the doll

Maybe she’s the shelf it sits on, strong and reliable

That’s until things start to crumble like she’s been hit with a sledgehammer

The first time it’s forgiven, the second time it’s not
She wonders how many lies it would take to stir the pot?

When the shelf falls, what’s left of her?

When she’s shattered to pieces on the cold linoleum floor, who will pick her up?

Is it her fault for believing the shelf would hold her, care for her?

Is she too trusting?

Maybe this is where she belongs

Looking at her porcelain doll friends sitting pretty

While she’s on the floor wishing she would’ve listened to the warning

“Don’t get too close to the edge!”

But now it’s too late and all that’s left of her are sharp shards of her fractured, fragile heart.
