Morning Commute

Wrapped in the cocooned warmth of love and blankets, I rise to the too-loud strumming of guitar, but not without a snooze or two. Into the bright, chilly bathroom I plunge, flushing the slumber from my drowsy eyes. My taste buds do an anticipatory dance in the mint foam, knowing coffee will be at their next party.

Dressing in the dark comes easily, its path familiar. I trade the comfort zone of my cozy pajamas for bold workout clothes laid out the night before. Tying my laces, a sharp punctuation of strength.

Quietly, the house snores. My sleeping pups stay snuggled.

I reach the Arabica palate rave, and with hands wrapped securely around a steaming mug of java, I reflect on yester- day’s gratitude, recalling God’s grace. With an open heart, I turn the pages with Jesus. I am a lost sheep, a beggar,

a prodigal son, a leper. I am unworthy. I am a disciple, a prophet, a follower, an apostle. I am redeemed. I am God’s child. I pray. Sunshine for the soul.

Renewal of the mind. Transformation. The hot pink high- lighter glides smoothly across dog-eared, principled pages. Yellow Post-its play peekaboo; a reminder to go back when time permits. Time is a precious gift with which we are per- mitted. Motivation. The almighty YouTube pulpit streams encouragement to this eager pupil’s ready ear. I scrawl notes of goals and visions, intention and commitment. Inspiration. Live your passion, find your purpose.

In the eye of last year’s storm, I unearthed my purpose: To create and serve. This year, I take action.

In the soft stained-glass glow of dawn’s light, I find myself in downward dog, my body aware, my mind open. Breath is relaxed and focused. I am learning to be still. I come
to the mat with acceptance. With hands poised for prayer, my thumbs rest gently on the third eye. This is a place of self-love and peace. The puzzle of mind, body, spirit comes together. The stretch of a new day looms.

I have arrived.

Undeterred

Words churn,
Inside they burn,
They want a turn,
To be heard.

Stampede of thought,
On lips caught,
Release sought,
Word herd.

No shepherd found,
Vowels are bound,
Thoughts run ‘round,
Ransom deferred.

Ideas shy,
Prompts dry,
Release a sigh,
Focus blurred.

Pages stocked,
Pen is cocked,
Channels blocked,
Drafts interred.

Scribble, scrabble,
Sense is babble,
Authors dabble,
Ideas spurred.

Dance on page,
Vocab stage,
Impression waged,
Scene transferred.

Phrase brings sight,
Portrayal delight,
Imagination ignite,
Spirit stirred.

Flow released,
Inspiration increased,
Clever feast,
Much preferred.

Final draft,
Hone my craft,
Reassured at last,
Relief occurred.

Queries sent,
Opinions lent,
Made a dent,
Invite conferred.

Published name,
In the game,
Embrace acclaim,
Undeterred.
