Artifacts
before the silky fabric of the cosmos
was stretched thin and cold
pinpoint lights dotted the night sky
twinkling in majesty
antiquus dierum—
ancient of days.
the inky sky was our museum—
our spyglass of time
displaying images older than the earth
these infinite pairs of eyes
watched you as you watched them
learning
examining
theorizing
unblinking they silently slinked across the velvet—
stable and youthful they were—
and silently they have winked out
the dark energy that violently pulls the fabric apart
swallowed up all the light, leaving only the darkness
their gift was shot in all directions
Antiquus Dierum ensured it would fall on Earth
to be witnessed and beheld by them,
but importantly, her
she who dreams of the warmth of the sun
on her cheeks and the cool mist of the cosmos
on her tired eyelids
she who shouldn’t exist
who Antiquus Dierum made a witness of the ancient
to the ancient
West Virginia Beaches
we make our own beaches
with waves crashing made from
hundreds of leaves rust’ling
carries a distant hum
our stars are just as bright
the envy of the gems
their pearly gleam flows down
to the praise of the lens
the sweet breeze just as damp
as on a summer night
in first droplets of spring
in crested mountains white
we, too, have the magic
in bushes of berries
in our orange street-lamps
and flowering prairies
belts out the same laughter
kids that never grow old
never see the day when
their high wonder turns cold
but sitting on the ground
that’s just as damp and cool
you feel just as lonely
as on the shoreline, too
